Metaphase is the third stage of mitosis. Single chromosome constitutes of 2 chromatids which are attached to each other by 1 centromere. Hence, 1 homologous chromosome pair has 4 chromatids. As chromosomes in animals are paired, as they are diploid and contains two sets of chromosomes, so formula becomes:
Chromosomes in gametes = No. of chromatids in a metaphase/4 = 64/4 = 16.
