$2 \times 16$ denotes the multiplication of 1-digit number with 2-digits number.

$2 \times 16$ can also be represented as $2 \times (10 + 6)$ , which is solved using box method below.

Placing digits on the box as shown in below figure,

Now, multiplying numbers on top of box by number on left of box as shown in below figure,

As we know, $2 \times 10 = 20$ and $2 \times 6 = 12$ which can be seen in figure below,

Now, sum of numbers in all the boxes will give the result,
$∴ 2 \times 16 = 20 + 12 = 32$
