Given:
Coefficient of volume expansion of glycerin, γ=5×104 C1
Change in temperature, ΔT=40C
We know that, due to thermal expansion, density as a function of temperature is given by, ρ=ρ0(1+γΔT)
ρ(1+γΔT)=ρ0
ρρ0=ργΔT
ρρ0ρ=γΔT
=5×104×40=0.020
The negative sign indicates that the density decreases with increase in temperature.
