The free energy of formation of alumina is more negative than Cr2O3 . According to thermodynamics if ΔG0, is more negative then reaction is more fealible.

Free energy of formation of Al2O3=827 kJ mol1
43Al+O223Al2O3 ΔGf=827 kJ mol1

Free energy of formation of Cr2O3=540 kJ mol1
So, 23Cr2O343Cr+O2 ΔGf=540 kJ mol1

Hence the free energy of reaction between Al and Cr2O3
2Al+Cr2O3Al2O3+2Cr
ΔG0=827+540=287 kJ mol
Hence the reaction is feasible.
