The value of △fG∘ for formation of Cr2O3 is - 540 KJ/mol and that of Al2O3 is - 827 kj/ mol. Is the reduction of Cr2O3 possible with AI?
The two thermochemical equations may be written as
(i)43Cr(s)+O2(g)⟶23Cr2O3(s)i△fG∘=−540kJ(ii)43AI(s)+O2(g)⟶23Al2O3(s)i△fG∘=−827kJ
Subtracting Eq. (i) from Eq. (ii) we get
23Cr2O3(s)+43al(s)⟶23Al2O3(s)+43Cr(s);△fG∘=−287kJ
The value of △fG∘ for formation of Cr2O3 is - 540 kJ/mol is higher than Al2O3 is - 827 kJ/ mol. Therfore, the reduction of Cr2O3 with AI is possible.
As △fG∘ comes out to be negative, the reaction is feasible, i.e., Al can be used for the reduction of Cr2O3
