The value of fG for formation of Cr2O3 is - 540 KJ/mol and that of Al2O3 is - 827 kj/ mol. Is the reduction of Cr2O3 possible with AI?

The two thermochemical equations may be written as
(i)43Cr(s)+O2(g)23Cr2O3(s)ifG=540kJ(ii)43AI(s)+O2(g)23Al2O3(s)ifG=827kJ
Subtracting Eq. (i) from Eq. (ii) we get
23Cr2O3(s)+43al(s)23Al2O3(s)+43Cr(s);fG=287kJ

The value of fG for formation of Cr2O3 is - 540 kJ/mol is higher than Al2O3 is - 827 kJ/ mol. Therfore, the reduction of Cr2O3 with AI is possible.

As fG comes out to be negative, the reaction is feasible, i.e., Al can be used for the reduction of Cr2O3
