Given equations:

$x + y = 7$ ......(i)

$5 x + 12 y = 7$ ......(ii)

From (i) $x = 7 - y$ ......(iii)

Substituting the value of $x$ in (ii)

$5 (7 - y) + 12 y = 7$

$7 y = - 28$

$\Rightarrow y = - 4$
