Quartiles are the set of values which has three points dividing the data set into four identical parts.

Example: Let's consider a data sample below:
1,3,4,7,9

The middle part of the three quarters (4) measures the central point of distribution, which is called as median.

The lower part of the quarters (1,3) indicates just half information set which comes under the median(4). Median of (1,3) is called the lower quartile.

The upper part of the quarters (7,9) shows the remaining half, which falls over the median. Median of (7,9) is called the upper quartile.

The maximum(9) and minimum(1) values are the extremes of the data.

Overall, the quartiles represent the distribution of the data.
