Question

The vapour pressure of water at 293K is 2338Pa and the vapour pressure of an aqueous solution is 2295.8Pa. If solution density is 1010kg/m3 at 313K, calculate the osmotic pressure at 313K. Molecular weight of solute =60

Solution

p0 =2338 Pa , Ps = 2295.8 Pa ; T = 293K

p0Psp0=n×MW=n×M×1000W×1000=molality×M1000

molality =23382295.82338×100018=1.003

Mass of solution =100 + 1.0030 × 60 = 1060.1 g = 1.061 kg

Volume of solution = 1.0601010m3 = 1.05×103m3

molality=1.0031.05×103=955.24molm3

Hence , osmotic pressure = nV×R×T

955.24×8.314×313=2.49×106pa

Hence osmotic pressure is approximately equal to 2.53×106 .
