Question

The variation of pressure with volume of the gas at different temperatures can be graphically represented as shown in given figure. On the basis of this graph answer the following questions.

A) How will the volume of a gas change if its pressure is increased at constant temperature?

B) At a constant pressure, how will the volume of a gas change if the temperature is increased from 200 K to 400 K ?

Solution

A)
According to Boyle’s law, the volume of a gas at constant temperature varies inversely with the pressure exerted on it.

In other words, at a constant temperature, if the pressure exerted on the gas increases, then the volume of the gas will decrease, it is clearly visible from graph. For example, at 400 K, when pressure increases from P1 to P2, the volume of the gas will decrease from V1 to V2 such that (V2<V1).

B)
According to Charles’s law, the volume of an ideal gas at constant pressure is directly proportional to the temperature.

In another words, at constant pressure, if the temperature increases, the volume of the gas will also increase. For example, if the temperature increases from 200 K to 400 K, then the volume will also increase from V1 to V2 such that (V2>V1), at constant pressure (P).
