Question

The velocity of sound in oxygen is ________ than in helium.

Open in App
Solution

Velocity of sound in a gas is given by ,
v=γRT/M
Hence , velocity of sound in helium is ,
vHe=γHeRT/MHe
And velocity of sound in oxygen is ,
vO=γORT/MO
Now , γO=7/5,γHe=5/3 ,
Therefore , if temperature is constant
vOvHe=γOMOγHeMH
or vOvHe=(7/5)×32(3/2)×2=3.84
The velocity of sound in oxygen is 3.84 than in helium .
