We know that, sum of magnitudes of areas formed under vt graph represents the distance travelled by the particle
total distance travelled in 8 s
= Sum of areas of both the trapeziums formed in the graph
=[(12×1×4)+(2×4)+(12×1×4))]+[(12×1×2)+(2×2)+(12×1×2)]
=12+6=18 m
