Question

The vertical limbs of a U shaped tube are filled with a liquid of density ρ upto height h on each side. The horizontal portion of U tube having 2h contains a liquid of density 2ρ. the U tube is moved horizontally with an accelerator g/2 parallel to the horizontal arm. Find the difference in liquid levels in the two vertical limbs, at steady state.

Solution

Given : a=g2
Pressure at A PA=Po+ρgh+(2ρ)g(hx)=Po+3ρgh2ρgx
Pressure at B PB=Po+ρgx
Using PAPB=[2ρ(h+x)+ρ(hx)]a

(Po+3ρgh2ρgx)(Po+ρgx)=[3ρh+ρx]×g2

OR 3ρgh3ρgx=32ρgh+12ρgx

OR 32ρgh=72ρgx x=37h

Difference in the heights between two columns ΔH=(2hx)x=2h2x
ΔH=2h6h7=8h7
