Question

The volume of 50g of a substance is 20cm3. If the density of water is 1g/cm3, will the substance sink or float when placed on the surface of water? What will be the mass of water displaced by the substance?

Solution

density=mass/volume
when substance sink or float in water it will exactly displace water equal to its volume i.e. 20
So the mass of water displaced= density of water * volume displaced
m=1×20
=20gm
