Question

The volume of a certain mass of a gas was found to be 800 cc when pressure was 760 mm of Hg. If the pressure increases by 50%. Calculate the new volume of the gas, assuming that temperature remains constant.

Solution

Step 1: Write the given terms:

Initial volume V1 = 800cc Final volume V2=?

Initial pressure P1=760 mm Final pressure P2= P1 + 50% of P1

Step 2: Find the final pressure = 760+ 50100× 760

P2= 760 + 380

= 1140 mm

Step 3: Find the new volume:

P1V1=P2V2, (According to Boyle's law at constant temperature)

V2= P1V1P2= 760×8001140 = 533.3 cc

Step 4: Result

Hence, the new volume of the gas is 533.3 cc.
