Question

The volume of a definite amount of hydrogen gas taken at 2atm pressure and 25oC temperature is 400ml.
(a) Suggest a method to increase the volume of this gas without change in pressure.
(b) If the volume of the gas is changed to 200mL, what will be the new pressure?
(Hint: Temperature is constant)
(c) State the gas law used to solve the problem (b).

Solution

According to Charles's law, when the pressure on a sample of a dry gas is held constant, the Kelvin temperature and the volume will be directly related. So, if we increase or decrease the temperature, then the volume will increase or decrease respectively as they are directly proportional.
(b) According to Boyle's law
P1V1=P2V2
2×400=P2×200
P2=4atm
(c) Boyle's law states that the product of the pressure and volume for a gas is a constant for a fixed amount of gas at a fixed temperature.
