Question

The wave function for a travelling wave on a taut string is (in SI units) s(x,t)=(0.350m)sin(10πt3πx+π/4). What is the vertical displacement of the string at t=0,x=0.100 m?

Solution

At t=0 and x=0.100 m, vertical displacement is given by

s(0.100,0)=0.350×sin(10π×03π×0.1+π4)

s(0.100,0)=0.350×sin(0.5π)=0.350×(0.156)=0.0546 m
