Question

The wavelength of a spectral line coming from a star is changed by the motion of the star from 6000 A to 6001 A. What is the velocity of the star with respect to earth? (The velocity of light is 3 x 108 m/sec)

Solution

The correct option is A 5 x 104 m/sec receding
Observed frequency for spectral lines: f=f0(1+Δvc)

where Δv=vrvs, vr is the velocity of the receiver and

vs is the velocity of the source wrt the medium and c is the velocity of light

ff0=f0Δvc

Δff=Δvc

But, Δff=Δλλ

Δλλ=Δvc

Δv=cΔλλ=3108(60016000)101060001010=5104m/s

Since, vr is zero it implies vs =5104m/s
