During the reign of Kanishka who was the great ruler of Kushana dynasty disputes were found among Buddhism. Kanishka called fourth Buddhist council at Kundalvana in Kashmir to resolve these disputes. After this council, two major sects of Buddhism came into existence named as Hinayana and Mahayana. Kanishka became the follower of Mahayana sect.
