Under Article 18, all titles conferred by the British like Sir, Sardar, or Bahadur were abolished. This was done to avoid discrimination based on these titles. The state is allowed to provide military or academic distinctions to its citizens. National honours awarded by the President are allowed to be adopted. This includes the Bharat Ratna and the Padma awards - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.
