Question

The electric field inside a spherical shell of uniform surface charge density is____.

Solution

Gauss law:

  1. Gauss Law states that the total electric flux (E) out of a closed surface is equal to the charge (q) enclosed divided by the permittivity(ε0) i.e. E=qε0
  2. The electric flux is the total number of electric field lines passing a given area in a unit of time.
  3. All the charges are concentrated on the outside surface of the shell, and the electric field inside the shell is zero (q=0).
  4. So the according to gauss law, E=0ε0=0.

Therefore, the electric field inside a spherical shell of uniform surface charge density is zero.
