August Weismann discovered that environmental factors affect only the somatic cells and not germ cells. Thus, he explained that acquired characters would be lost with the death of that organism and therefore discarded lamarckism which proposes that changes in the organ or somatic cells due to environmental factors, are inherited by future generations.
