Let the percentage of isotope 168X = x
and percentage of isotope
188X = 100 - x

Average atomic mass of an element (X) = 16.2

Average atomic mass
= Mass of 168X × Percentage of 168X + Mass of 188X × Percentage of 188X100
16.2 = 16 × x + 18 × (100-x) 100

1620 = 16x+1800-18x
2x = 1800-1620
x = 1802
x = 90

The percentage of isotope 168X or x = 90%
The percentage of isotope 188X = (100-x) = (100-90) = 10%
