Number of pieces given to Alex's friends = $\frac{1}{2}$ x 12
= 12 $\div$ 4 = 6
Number of pieces given to Alex's sister = $\frac{1}{4}$ of 12
= 12 $\div$ 4
= 3
Total number of pieces distributed = 6 + 3 = 9
Number of pieces remaining with Alex = 12 - 9 = 3
