There are 12 pieces of chocolate with Alex. Half of it was given to Alex's friends and a quarter of it was given to his sister. Represent the portion he gave away by shading the portion on a rectangle.

Total number of chocolate pieces = 12 pieces
Number of pieces given to Alex's friends = 12 x 12
= 12 ÷ 4 = 6
Number of pieces given to Alex's sister = 14 of 12
= 12 ÷ 4
= 3
Total number of pieces distributed = 6 + 3 = 9
Number of pieces remaining with Alex = 12 - 9 = 3
