There are 9 coins in a bag, 5 of which are sovereigns and the rest are unknown coins of equal value; find what they must be if the probable value of a draw is 12 shillings.

Open in App
Solution

1 sovereign=20 shillings
Let the value of the other coin be x shillings
If coin drawn is sovereign then probable value =59×20=1009
If other coin is drawn then probable value =49×x=4x9
Total probable value =12
1009+4x9=12100+4x=1084x=8x=2
So the coins are of value 2 shilling each
