Mean rainfall,

¯¯¯¯P=P1+P2+P3+P44

=780+640+400+5204=585 mm

Standard deviation,

σn1=  4i=1(Pi¯¯¯¯P)2n1

=(780585)2+(640585)2+(400585)2+(520585)23

=162.788

Coefficient of variation,

CV=σn1¯¯¯¯P×100=162.788585×100=27.827%

Optimum number of rain gauges,

N=(CV)2=(27.82710)2=7.7438

Hence, 8 rain gauges are required.
