Question

There are some lotus in a pound. Group of birds were throught to rest there. Each birds were sit on each flowers. Then one bird hasn't lotus to sit.on another case, each pair of birds were sat on each flower.
Then how many flowers were there and how many birds were there?

Let number of lotuses be x
and, number of birds be y.
As per your first statement- 'Each birds were sit on each flowers. Then one bird hasn't lotus to sit.'
x+1 = y ...(1)
and as per your second statement- ' on another case, each pair of birds were sat on each flower.'
If y birds are their, there will be y2 pairs and each sat on each flower.
So, y2=x
y=2x ...(2)
Substituting the value of y from eqn.(2) in eqn.(1),
x+1 = 2x
x = 1
So, y = 2x = 2 × 1 = 2
So, number of lotuses are 1 and number of birds are 2.
