Question

There are two compartments in a rigid fully insulated tank of 14 m3 volume. First compartment contains 8 m3 of a gas (c = 1 kJ\kgK) at 0.7 MPa and 28C and other contain gas (c = 0.7 kJ/kgK) 6 m3 at 1MPa and 840C. If the portion between the gas is removed, what is the final temperature of the gas?

Solution

The correct option is B 164.9C

mA=PVRT=0.7×8R×(28+273)=4215R

mB=PVRT=1×6R×(840+273)=2371R

mAmB=3.451

From energy balance:

mAcA(T301)=mBcB(1113T)

3.451mB×1(T301)=mB×0.7×(1113T)

4.93T1483.93=1113T

T=437.9 K=164.9C
