Question

There are two concentric spherical shells of radii r and 2r. Initially a charge Q is given to the inner shell.Now, switch S1 is closed and opened then S2 is closed and opened and the process is repeated n times for both the keys alternatively. Find the final potential difference between the shells

Solution

When S1 is closed
Since outer shell is grounded Vouter=0 and let q1 be the charge on outer sphere after some time t.
Vouter=0
kQ2r+kq12r=0
q1=Q
When S2 is closed
Let q1 be charge on inner surface after some time t.
kQ2r+kq1r=0
q1=Q2

Now, again when S1 is closed
Let q2 be the charge on outer sphere
kQ2×2r+kq22r=0
q2=Q2

Now when S1 is opened and S2 is closed
kQ/22r+kq2r=0

Similarly proceeding after n times,
qn=Q2n1
qn=Q2n

Therefore, potential difference between the two shells after n times
VAB=kqn(1r12r)=kQ2n+1r
