Question

There are two elements A 26 mass number and 13 atomic number and B 26 mass number and 14 atomic number . find the number of sub atomic particles in each of these elements.what is the relationship between the two?

Open in App
Solution

A
Number of protons = atomic number = 13
Number of electrons = number of protons = 13
Mass number = 26
Mass number = No. of Protons + No. of neutrons
Number of neutrons = Mass number(atomic mass) -No. of protons = 26-13 = 13

B. Number of protons = atomic number = 14
Number of electrons = number of protons = 14
Mass number = 26
Mass number = No. of Protons + No. of neutrons
Number of neutrons = Mass number(atomic mass) -No. of protons = 26 - 14 = 12

Isobars are elements with the same mass number but a different atomic number.
Hence, Both A and B have the same mass number but different atomic numbers hence called Isobars.
Isobars have different numbers of electrons, Protons & Neutrons But the sum of a number of neutrons & Protons i.e. a number of nucleons remain the same.
