Question

There is a 2.5 m broad path along the sides of a swimming pool which is 40 m long and 30 m broad. What is the area of the path?

Solution

Let ABCD be the swimming pool. There is a path outside the swimming pool. From the given information, we get the figure XYZW which is also a rectangle.
Length of ABCD = 40 m
Breadth of ABCD = 30 m
Area of ABCD = length × breadth
= 40 × 30 m2
= 1200 m2
Now, there is a 2.5 m broad path along the outside of the swimming pool.
∴ Length of XYZW = 40 + 2.5 + 2.5 m = 45 m
Breadth of XYZW = 30 + 2.5 + 2.5 m = 35 m
Area of XYZW = length × breadth
= 45 × 35 m2
= 1575 m2
Area of path = Area of XYZW − Area of ABCD
= 1575 m2 − 1200 m2
= 375 m2
