There is a great concern all over the world to conserve biodiversity for maintaining ecological balance in nature. Explain giving three reasons. Write different ways that have helped in increasing tiger population in our country. [5 marks]
The reason for conserving the biodiversity is grouped into three catergories, they are narrowly utilitarian, broadly utilitarian and ethical. [1 mark for each point]
i) According to the narrowly utilitarian arguments, biodiversity should be conserved as they provide direct economic benefits from nature like food, firewood, fibre, construction material, industrial products and products of medicinal importance.
ii) According to the broadly utilitarian argument, biodiversity plays a major role in many ecosystem services that nature provides and hence should be conserved.
iii) The ethical argument for conserving biodiversity relates to what we owe to millions of plant, animal and microbe species with whom we share this planet.
Different ways that have helped in increasing tiger population in our country are: [2 marks]
In situ conservation: This is the on-site conservation of resources in their natural habitat.
Ex situ conservation: In this approach, the animal is taken out from its natural habitat and placed in special setting where it is protected and given special care.
