Let us take the whole cake as 1.

Fraction of cake eaten $=\frac{5}{8}+\frac{1}{8}=\frac{6}{8}$

Fraction of cake remaining for the other two friends $=1-\frac{6}{8}$

$=\frac{8}{8}-\frac{6}{8}$

$=\frac{8-6}{8}=\frac{2}{8}$

$=\frac{1}{4}$
