Solution

A food chain refers to the order of events in an ecosystem, where one living organism eats another organism, and later that organism is consumed by another larger organism.

  1. Most consumers have more than one source of food.
  2. Grass belongs to autotrophs. Grass is eaten by herbivores as well as by many insects. So grass belongs to multiple food chains.
  3. Frogs eat caterpillars besides grasshoppers. Snakes eat rabbits as well as lizards, mice and rats. Rats are also eaten by hawks.
  4. Thus, a plant or animal may be a part of several food chains.
  5. Several food chains are interconnected to form a food web.
