The Right to Information (RTI) Act was passed by the parliament on 15 June, 2005. It came into force on 12 October, 2005. The RTI law empowered ordinary citizens by making the culture of governance more transparent, accountable, and participatory. Since its inception, it has helped activists on a broad range of social issues including land and environmental rights, social security benefits, the working of financial institutions, political party financing, civic infrastructure, and even public-private partnerships.
