Aldehydes having αhydrogen (s) undergo self -condensation on warming with the dilute or mild base to give β- hydroxy aldehydes, called aldol (adehyde+ alcohol). This reaction is known as aldol condensation.
A typical example is the reaction of acetaldehyde with a base under mild condition.
This given conversion can be done by a retro-aldol condensation reaction.
