Endocrine Glands:

  1. Glands that are responsible for the formation of hormones are known as endocrine glands.
  2. They secrete their product (hormone) directly into the blood instead of a duct.
  3. Five endocrine glands are given below:

(A) Pancreas - It is located in the abdomen.

  1. Secretion - It secretes insulin and glucagon hormones.
  2. Function - Insulin reduces blood glucose levels. Glucagon increases blood glucose levels.

(B) Thyroid gland - It is present in the neck region.

  1. Secretion - It secretes a hormone known as thyroxine.
  2. Function - Thyroxine hormone regulates carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism for healthy bodily growth and brain development.

(C) Adrenal - It is present in our kidneys.

  1. Secretion - It secretes adrenaline and corticoids.
  2. Function - Adrenaline helps in dealing with emergency situations while corticoids regulate the metabolism of glucose and minerals.

(D) Testes - It is present in the abdomen of males.

  1. Secretion - It secretes testosterone.
  2. Function - It helps in the production of male gametes and it promotes secondary growth in males.

(E) Ovary - It is present in the abdomen of females.

  1. Secretion - It secretes estrogen and progesterone.
  2. Function - It helps in the production of female gametes and it promotes secondary growth in females.
