Duck-billed platypus and spiny anteater are both egg-laying mammals. These are exceptions as the mammals are viviparous, whereas these organisms are oviparous. However, they have exclusive characteristic of mammals i.e., the presence of mammary glands.

Assertion-Reason relation

Mammals have seven cervical vertebrae and 12 pairs of cranial nerves. Duck-filled platypus and the spiny anteater have the same characters as well. However, the presence of these characters is not the exclusive feature of mammals.

Hence, both assertion and reason are true but reason is not a correct explanation of the assertion.
