Meteoroids are large celestial rocks that tend to hit planets and their moons. When doing so, they enter a planet's atmosphere with high speed, and burn up due to friction with the air. Because of this, chunks of their burned content is scattered in the atmosphere in the form of fireballs which look like shooting stars. This scattering of burned pieces of meteoroids is called a meteor shower. Sometimes, a piece of the meteoroid can survive its whole trip through the planet's atmosphere, and reach the planet's surface. This remnant of a meteoroid is called a meteorite.
