Heat gained by the unit mass of a substance to convert itself from solid to liquid state is called latent heat of melting . The latent heat of melting of ice is 80cal.g1 or 80×4.2=336J , therefore each 1 gram of ice requires 336J of heat to melt , this much heat is not available to the large mass of ice on glaciers even in summer so ice doesn't melt completely in summer or winter .
