Three circles, of radii r,2r and r are drawn with their centres on the diagonal of a square, touching one another and the square as shown in the figure below. What is the ratio of the radius of the smaller circles to the side of the square?

Let AH=AD=x

BAH=45o

rx=tan45o

x=r

AB=AH2+BH2=r2

BC=r

AC= r2r=r(21)

Similarly, EF=r(21)

Length of diagonal AE=2r+2r+4r+2r(21)

=r(6+22)

If length of square =9

length of diagonal =a2

a2=r(6+22)

ra=26+22.
