X and Z are the extreme elements. Therefore,
5x+ 17x = 176
22x = 176
x = 8
Atomic weight of X= 5*8= 40
Atomic weight of Z= 17*8= 136
Dobereiner stated in his law of triads that the arithmetic mean of the atomic masses of the first and third element in a triad would be approximately equal to the atomic mass of the second element in that triad.Therefore,

Atomic mass of Y = average of atomic mass of X and Z
= (40 + 136) / 2
= 88
