Question

Three identical balls each of mass m=0.5 kg are connected with each other as shown in Figure and rest over a smooth horizontal table. At moment t=0, ball B is imparted a horizontal velocity v0=9ms1. Calculate velocity of A just before it collides with ball C.

Solution

Let v1 be the initial velocity of A and C just before collision, v2 and v2 be the velocity
of B just before the collision. v is the velocity of ball A at which it is imparted,
v= 9 m/s.
Initially conservation of momentum,
mv= mv1+mv1+mv2
v= v-2v2
v2=v2v1------ (1)
From conservation of K.E,
12mv2=12mv21+12mv21+12mv22
v2=2v21+v22----- (2)
(1) in (2)-
v2=2v21+v24vv1+4v21
6v21= 4vv1
v1=v(23)v1=9(23)=6m/s
