Three matured air dried bean seeds are taken and tied to a glass slide at three positions as shown. This slide is kept in a beaker containing water in a manner that the top seed is well above water, the middle one is just at the water level and the bottom one is deep in water. The experimental set up is left in a warm place for a few days. What will you notice by the end of the process?
The middle seed will germinate, the top and the bottom seeds will not germinate.
Seed requires both right amount oxygen(air) as well as water to germinate. It will be noticed that the middle seed germinates, the seed at the top does not germinate while the bottom one either does not germinate or germinates very little. The middle seed germinates because it gets the right quantity of oxygen (air) as well as water. The top seed gets only air and no water while the bottom seed gets water but doesn't get air as it is submerged in water completely.
