Question

Three moles of an ideal gas being initially at a temperature Ti=273 K were isothermally expanded 5 times its initial volume and then isochorically heated so that the pressure in the final state become equal to that in the initial state. The total heat supplied in the process is 80 kJ. If γ=CpCv of the gas is x10, find x.

Solution

For the process BC, ΔV=0 thus WBC=0
Process AB is isothermal, thus ΔUAB=0
WAB=nRTolnVBVA=3(8.314)(273)ln5=10958.93J
ΔUBC=nCvΔT=3Cv(5ToTo)=3276Cv
Q=ΔU+W
80000=3276Cv+10958.93
Cv=21.07
Also, CpCv=R=8.314Cp=29.39
Now CpCv=1.4
Hence, x=14
