Question

Three particles A, B and C of equal mass, move with equal speed v along the medians of an equilateral triangle as shown in the figure. They collide at centroid G of the triangle. After collision, A comes to rest and B retracts its path with speed v. What is the speed of C after collison?

Solution

The correct option is C v
The resultant momentum of the system is zero because vector sum of momentum of B and C is equal and opposite to that of A.
Now , as their is no external force (collision is internal to the system) momentum of the system will be conserved.
Therefore final momentum will also be zero.
given, A comes to rest and B retraces back its path with same velocity, C will go along the line joining B to the median but in opposite direction.
