Three resistors of $10 Ω$ , $15 Ω$ and $20 Ω$ are connected in series in a circuit. If the potential drop across the $15 Ω$ resistor is $3 V$ , find the current in the circuit, potential drop across $10 Ω$ and the net emf of the source used in the circuit. (Draw the circuit diagram)

Solution

In series combination current through all the resistor is same
Potential drop across $15 Ω$ resistor $= 3 V$
$3 = i \times 15 \Rightarrow i = \frac{1}{5} A$
Potential drop across $10 Ω$ resistor $= 10 \times \frac{1}{5} = 2 V$
Emf of cell $= i (R e q) = \frac{1}{5} (10 + 15 + 20) = \frac{45}{5} = 9 v$
