Question

Three rods of material X and three rods of material Y are connected as shown in figure. All the rods are identical in length and cross-sectional area. If the end A is maintained at 60C and the junction E at 10C, calculate the temperatures of the junctions B,C,D. The thermal conductivity of X is 0.92 CGS units and that of Y is 0.46 CGS units.

Solution

Rx1Kx,Ry1Ky RxRy=KyKx=0.460.92=12
Let Rx=RRy=2R
Let us find out the total resistance.
R=Ry+ effective resistance in the bridge
R=2R+2R×4R2R+4R=2R+43R=103R
and θ=I×R
For A and B,θAθB=60θB=2R×I....(1)
For B and C,θBθC=2/3(I×R)....(2)
For B and C,θCθE=2/3(I×R).....(3)
For A and E,θAθE=6010=50
10/3(R×I)=50
R×I=15
θAθB=2×15=30θB=6030=30C,
Further, θBθC=(2/3)×15=10
θC=3010=20C
Obviously, θC=θD=20C.
