Question

Three tankers contain 203 litres , 319 litres and 377 litres of diesel respectively. Find the maximum capacity of a container that can measure the diesel of three tankers exact number of times.

Solution

Amount of diesel present in the first tank = 203 litres

Amount of diesel present in the second tank = 319litres

Amount of diesel present in the third tank = 377 litres

To measure the three tankers, we need to find the container’s maximum measuring capacity. We need to find the HCF because the measuring capacity is smaller than 203 litres, 319 litres and 377 litres.

Prime factorisation of 203,319,377 -:

203=7×29

319=11×29

377=13×29

H.C.F. (203,319,377)=29

Therefore, 29 litres of the container is required to measure the quantity. i. e. The maximum measuring capacity is 29 litres.
