Question

Three test tubes A, B and C are taken with CuSO4, FeSO4 and AgNO3 solutions respectively. What are the observations if:

a. Femetal is added to CuSO4 solution in the test tube A?

b. Cu turnings are added to FeSO4 solution in the test tube B?

c. Zn is added to AgNO3 solution in the test tube C?

Solution

Displacement reaction: Reaction in which one of the higher reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its solution. A+BCAC+B ( Here A is more reactive than B)

Reactivity series:

K>Na>Ca>Mg>Al>Zn>Mn>Fe>Ni>Sn>Pb>H>Cu>Hg>Ag>Au>Pt

Here K(potassium) is a highly reactive metal and Pt(platinum) is the least reactive metal.

On the basis of the reactivity series, we can decide reaction will take place or not.

Three test tubes A, B and C are taken with CuSO4, FeSO4 and AgNO3 solutions respectively.

a. Femetal is added to CuSO4 solution in the test tube A.

Observation:

When iron metal is dipped in CuSO4 solution, displacement reaction takes place and formation of ferrous sulphate occur which is a green colour solution and on the iron deposition of copper takes place which turns grey colour iron to brown in colour.

Reaction

CuSO(4aq)+Fe(s)FeSO(4aq)+Cu(s)

Copper(II)sulphate Iron Iron sulphate Copper

(Blue ) (Grey) (Green) (Brown)

Since Fe is more reactive than Cu displacement takes place.

b. Cu turnings are added to FeSO4 solution in the test tube B.

Observation:

When copper metal is dipped in FeSO4 solution, a displacement reaction will not take place. Since Cu is less reactive than Fe so it cannot displace Fe from FeSO4 solution.

Reaction

FeSO(4aq)+Cu(s)noreaction

Iron(II)sulphate Copper

Since Fe is more reactive than Cu displacement will not take place.

c. Zn is added to AgNO3 solution in the test tube C

Observation:

When zinc metal is dipped in AgNO3 solution, displacement reaction takes place and formation of zinc nitrate occur which is colourless and formation of grey colour silver takes place.

Reaction

2AgNO3(aq)+Zn(s)Zn(NO3)2(aq)+2Ag(s)

Silver nitrate Zinc Zinc nitrate Silver

(Colourless ) (Grey) (Colourless) (Grey)

Since Zn is more reactive than Ag displacement takes place.
