Refraction of the light:

  1. Refraction is the change in the direction of a light wave passing from one medium to another.
  2. Refraction is the bending of a wave when it passes from one medium to another. The bending is caused due to the differences in density between the two mediums. One being optically denser and another optically rarer medium.

Because of light refraction, this same light will shift away from the usual (NN'), and indeed the fish (denoted as F) would perceive an extended or prolonged picture of the fisherman (AB) as AB'.

The diagram is shown below:

When a ray from man B in the air (rarer medium) goes to water (denser medium), then it bends towards the normal. Therefore, it appears' to the fish as if the man is taller than he actually is.
